The EmployAbility Process


Primary Services

Our 5-step process for getting you the help you need. Subject to change depending on the client’s needs.

1) Initial Screening & Employer Assessment

Meet with an EmployAbility Coordinator to:

  • Discuss services offered through EmployAbility Project and expectations of involvement.

  • Review individual’s Application & Resume.

  • Identify barriers to being in the workforce.

  • Determine if EmployAbility services are a match with the person’s career goal.

If services are a match based on the individual’s goals, the Coordinator will arrange for the Academic Assessment & Admission Interview. A report of recommendation will be sent to the Counselor. If services are not a match based on the individual’s goals, a report will be sent to the Counselor with feedback and/or recommendations.

A formal interview with business representatives that serve on the volunteer Business Advisory Council (BAC). The interviewers review relevant information collected at the Initial Screen & Academic Assessment. They ask a series of questions that assess the individual’s knowledge of chosen career & soft skills to offer realistic feedback. Recommendations are made about entry to the EmployAbility Project and services that would benefit the individual in preparing for employment in the chosen career field and offer a realistic view of the careers in the chosen field.

The EmployAbility Project Coordinator will contact the individual via phone to discuss the recommendations. A formal report will be presented to the Counselor for review & future planning.

2) Academic Assessment

Meet with your EmployAbility Coordinator to:

  • Review individual’s aptitudes & understanding of careers in the chosen career field.

  • Review educational background/training and/or offer recommendations to improve individual’s marketability in the chosen career area.

Recommendations will be presented in report format to the individual, the EmployAbility Coordinator and Counselor for review & future planning.

3) Academic Planning

Once a chosen career is identified the individuals work with the EmployAbility Academic Advisor to develop a comprehensive academic plan that outlines coursework & identifies services needed to be successful in pursuit of chosen career. The academic plan will be given to the individual, EmployAbility Coordinator & Counselor.

4) Mentor-Academic/IT/Business

If additional academic support is needed and the services currently offered by the educational institution are not sufficient, an academic mentor relationship can be developed. A customized plan will be developed with the individual, the Client Counselor, The EmployAbility Academic Advisor and the EmployAbility Coordinator. Or, a formalized connection with a business professional or IT professional (for up to 90 days) that assists the individual with career preparation & offers insight into the chosen career field. The EmployAbility Coordinator works with the individual to identify goals for the mentor relationship, arrange the initial meeting and Mentor Agreement, and provides ongoing oversight to ensure goals are being met.Monthly progress reports will be sent to the Counselor reflecting mentor activities.

5) Internship

The EmployAbility Coordinator & BAC representatives will assist individuals with identifying appropriate internship opportunities. Once an internship is identified the Coordinator will work with the individual and the employer to develop the internship agreement & monitor progress.The internship agreement and ongoing progress reports will be forwarded to the Counselor in the form of the monthly progress report.

 

Additional Services

Career Exploration • Informational Interviews • Job Tours/Shadows: Focused interview with a person in the industry that is conducted by the individual to gather valuable information about the nature of the job/the industry/the company that will assist the individual with future career planning & networking. The EmployAbility Coordinator works with the individual to prepare for the interview make the appropriate business connections and at times attends the interview with the individual.Monthly progress reports will be sent to the Counselor reflecting informational interview activities & results.

Resume Development & Planning: Development of a resume template that involves the individual, the mentor, and representatives from the EmployAbility BAC who offer feedback & guidance. The end result is a comprehensive resume that is within industry standards.Monthly progress reports will be sent to the Counselor reflecting resume development activities & plan.

Work Readiness Assessment: Assessment to review an individual’s work ethic, time management system & soft skills. Based on results the EmployAbility Coordinator will work with the individual to establish goals that address areas that need improvement & to identify resources to meet these goals.Monthly progress reports will be sent to the Counselor reflecting organizational assessment results & goals. 

Dressing For Success: Provide resources & discuss professional dress. The EmployAbility Coordinator will assist the individual with building & caring for their professional wardrobe.

Interview Preparation/Mock Interviews/Videotaped Interviews: A video taped interview is conducted with the EmployAbility Coordinator to assist in assessing the individuals interviewing skills. EmployAbility will review the interview with the individual & assist with developing a plan to improve interviewing skills.The individual will receive a tape of the interview.Month progress reports will be sent to the Counselor reflecting recommendations & plans from the interview.

Network Development: Discuss how to build and use professional contacts.  Learn the value of having a personal network, how to develop useful contacts, how to maintain and grow your network.

Social Media Skills: Learn how to use social media for job searches, networking and maintaining/growing your contacts.  Learn the do’s and don’t of posting on social media sites.

Job Search: Once career field(s) have been researched and resume developed, an Employability coordinator will work with the individual to develop outcome based job search skills.  Will discuss employment agencies, online job boards, resume posting.  An Employability Coordinator will be available for questions/feedback throughout the job search process. 

Career Coaching: Individual or small group coaching to identify and explore options, barriers and methods for achieving goals.

 

Specialized Programs

STUDENT TRANSITION TO EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (STEP)

The EmployAbility Project has developed the “Student Transition to Employment Program” or “STEP” that provides training and support to assist students with disabilities ages 16-22 in transition reach their employment goals. Studies show that youth with disabilities who are actively involved in their education process have better outcomes, take more responsibility in planning their future, and gain self-confidence that help them reach goals that include employment, college and independent community living. The EmployAbility Project developed STEP when it recognized that by offering specific training on basic job development skills students with disabilities can be actively involved in planning their transition to employment. EmployAbility developed a series of employer driven career training for students in transition from school to work that includes:

Career Exploration and Planning: Career Clusters, building career exploration and planning skills, researching careers Panel to include experts from IT, Healthcare, HR & Retail

Job Search: Applications, resumes, technology & job resources, organization. Experts from DVR and local colleges

Interviewing: Workshop with Professional Recruiter

Network Development: How to build and use On line Social Media & Professional contacts. Employer Panel to include area business leaders.

Company Tours: Scheduled Separately

What do STEP sessions look like?

  • Four 2 ½ hour sessions held consecutively

  • The groups are limited in size to maximize learning potential & encourage peer interaction

  • Each session is lead by area executives and employers from our Business Advisory Council according to subject expertise

  • Industry guest speakers/specialists provide detailed information about careers in various professions

  • Company tours are provided to give participants a first hand look and feel of the environment within selected industries, organizations and agencies.

Program Outcomes:

  • Students graduate from the program with a specific, focused and developed career choice

  • Students gain a network of peer support

  • Students develop outcome based job searching skills

  • Students develop a personal resume highlighting their skills, knowledge and experience

  • Students build a social media network

  • All students gain employment references and resources as well as a network of professional employer and mentor contacts.

VETERAN TRANSITION TO EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (VTEP)

The EmployAbility Project has developed the “Veteran Transition to Employment Program” or “VTEP” to provide training and support to assist returning veterans in transition reach their employment goals. It is our belief that veterans gain a significant advantage for transitioning back in to civilian life by developing a network in the employer community as well as needed resources for a more holistic integration into the community at large.  The EmployAbility Project developed VTEP when it recognized that by offering specific training for job development skills and providing local mentors,  veterans  can be actively involved in planning their transition to employment with better outcomes. The EmployAbility series includes employer driven career training for:
